Capenlogue Hotel Review
1. Design: 5/5
The exterior design and landscaping perfectly capture the essence of a Provence château-like retreat, with charming gravel paths, olive trees, lush lavender, and manicured hedges. However, once you step inside, the interior design deviates from the traditional French aesthetic. It is modern, chic, and tasteful, with what I'd describe as a subtle SoCal flair. Every detail is beautifully executd, and I even noted some design elements I'd love to incorporate into my own home.

2. Amenities & Service: 5/5
The service is exceptional, and you’ll always find someone available to assist, whether it's helping you arrange a nearby wine tasting at Château de Mille, as we did, or offering suggestions for other things to do outside the hotel. They’re happy to help with anything. Speaking of which, we rented e-bikes provided by the hotel to get there (we had such a blast!).
We also spent a good amount of time at the spa, which was just as enjoyable as it was aesthetically beautiful. The spa features a Roman bath for soaking, a steam room, and an area for a cold water plunge after the steam—perfect if you're into that. It was lovely. They also offer services like facials and massages. At the end of the spa area, there is a well-equipped gym, which we didn’t have time to try but definitely wanted to.
On the hotel grounds, there are two picturesque swimming pools. Unfortunately, they were not heated, which would have been a welcome feature during our visit in mid-September. Despite that, we spent plenty of time soaking up the sun and enjoying our books by the pools. The lounge beds are well-maintained and tidied up throughout the day, with staff available to take food and drink orders during specific hours.
There is also an outdoor hot tub nestled more privately on the far side of the grounds, as well as a bocce ball area. Around every corner, you’ll find charming spots with tables and chairs, perfect for enjoying a glass of wine or afternoon espresso in the enchanting setting. If you never left the hotel, you’d never be bored—there’s so much to enjoy right here.

3. Food & Drink: 5/5
As our bags were being checked, we took the opportunity to book dinner reservations at the hotel’s on-site restaurants, which include three exceptional options: La Bastide, Bergerie, and Café Capelongue. Each offers a unique experience, but breakfast at La Bergerie was a standout highlight during our stay.
Breakfast at La Bergerie combines buffet-style dining with elevated service. You can choose your seat, and a waiter will take your coffee and egg order, preparing the eggs to your preference with any toppings you desire. I loved their delicately made scrambled eggs with a custard-like consistency, topped with tomatoes and bacon. On other mornings, I tried their equally delicious omelets. The buffet itself is impressive, offering an array of fresh options, including yogurt parfaits, pastries, cheeses, smoked trout, fruits, jams, and a variety of juices. The green juice is a must-try, and everything tasted incredibly fresh, with many ingredients sourced directly from the hotel’s gardens.
For lunch, La Bergerie also delivers with a fantastic menu. Some of our favorite dishes were the Provençal pizza and the shareable spreads. I believe the menus change seasonally to highlight the freshest ingredients.
One afternoon, we visited Café Capelongue for espressos and a snack. The setting was serene, as we were the only ones there at the time. You can sit inside, at the bar, or outside in the picturesque courtyard—we opted for the courtyard.
For a truly memorable experience, I highly recommend booking a reservation at the Michelin-starred Bergerie. Each dish is like a work of art—refined, elegant, surprising (and delicious). The wine selection was top-notch; we requested a light red from the Burgundy region, and the wine recommended to us did not disappoint. While the restaurant was a bit of a splurge overall, it was an experience we found well worth it. Enjoying this exquisite meal on our final evening made for a perfect and memorable end to our stay.

4. Location: 4/5
Capelongue is nestled deep in the heart of Provence, just a 10-minute walk from the charming village of Bonnieux. The walk is hilly but beautiful, offering art galleries, restaurants, and scenic views if you decide to venture out for dinner. Other picturesque Provençal villages, including Gordes and Lourmarin, are also nearby. We were eager to visit Lourmarin, but a rental car is necessary, and they can be quite pricey, so keep that in mind.
We took an Uber from the train station to Capelongue upon arrival, and the hotel arranged a car for our departure. We stayed for five nights, and if we had to do it again, we might have rented a car from the start to visit more villages. That said, a rental car isn’t essential, especially for a shorter stay, as there’s so much to explore and enjoy right at the hotel.
I was surprised that the hotel didn’t mention the hike, and they seemed a bit hesitant when we told them we planned to walk from Capelongue to La Coste, the village across the way. However, if you're comfortable with Google Maps, it’s about an hour to an hour and a half one-way. After passing through the main village of Bonnieux, you'll be on a quiet serene path that veers off the main road, and the views along the way are absolutely stunning. If you visit in June or July, you’ll likely see the lavender fields in full bloom. This hike ended up being one of our favorite days.

Any Negatives?
- No Heated Pools: The swimming pools aren’t heated, which may be a downside during cooler seasons or even in mid-September (when we visited).
- Expensive Car Rentals: Rental cars are necessary for exploring further villages, and are on the pricier side, especially if staying for a longer period. However, if you're local to France and are driving in, you get to disregard this entirely 🙂
Final Thoughts
Capelongue offers an unforgettable experience with its perfect mix of luxury, natural beauty, and exceptional service. It’s ideal for those seeking relaxation and immersion in the beauty of Provence. While a rental car may be necessary for those wanting to explore the area more extensively, the hotel’s on-site amenities, beautiful setting, and delicious food scene make it well worth the visit. It’s a peaceful and enchanting retreat, perfect for a truly memorable stay. We would LOVE to come back and highly recommend.
